According to the reports from France, Lovro Majer is the subject of interest from Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain over a possible move in the summer transfer window. The 24-year-old Stade Rennais midfielder is also a target for Real Madrid.
Lovro Majer spent his formative years at six Croatian clubs before graduating from the Lokomotiva Zagreb academy. The player first burst into the limelight after moving to Dinamo Zagreb in 2018 and has taken his career to new heights since joining Ligue 1 club Stade Rennais last summer.
The 24-year-old took little time to establish himself as one of the best midfielders in Ligue 1 and enjoyed an excellent 2021/22 campaign. Majer amassed 11 goals and 13 assists in 49 appearances for Rennes. And his exploits have not gone unnoticed, with some of the most high profile clubs in Europe, including Real Madrid and PSG, setting their sights on him.
When it comes to a possible price, the midfielder’s value is at 20 million euros, and he’s under contract until 2026. Furthermore, PSG isn’t the only club eyeing Majer, as RB Leipzig and Atletico Madrid are keen on him this summer.
Manchester United could be forced to explore alternatives if Frenkie de Jong decides to stay with Barcelona beyond this summer. Developments emerged on Wednesday night, claiming new boss Erik ten Hag is eyeing a reunion with his former Ajax midfielder. One of those alternatives is Lovro Majer.
Lovro Majer is quickly gaining traction despite continuing to operate beneath the radar. Although hardly young at 24, there is a feeling in his native Croatia that he is the heir to Luka Modric’s throne.
Majer has been one of the standout names in Ligue 1 this season with Rennes, where he has single-handedly dictated the tempo of matches. He is a technical midfield player who loves to orchestrate play and dominate the ball.
De Jong is undeniably a cut above Majer, but with the right coaching and tactical blueprint from Ten Hag, there is no reason why United can’t build around his qualities.
While Majer does favour an advanced midfield role, he also has the ability to play as the No 8, a role he’s played on many occasions this season.
The left-footed maestro would not cost a pretty penny, and at the ripe age of 24, he is only going to improve United’s midfield options.
Ten Hag needs at least two new recruits in that department and potentially more with Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic heading for the exit door.
